edumacation: part 2
i first stumbled across the amazing designs of haider ackerman after worshiping at the alter that is the seven new york website. they continue to be one of the most progressive boutiques in the country, bringing in international labels like bless and cassette playa as well as forward thinking designers like bernard wilhelm and gareth pugh.
haider spent his youth in ethiopia, chad and algeria as the adopted child of french amnesty international workers. spending his teenage years in france and the netherlands ackerman grew up drawing inspiration from both the powerful women of the west as well as the tradition bound women of various african cultures. after two years at the prestigious royal academy in belgium (a school that has turned out some of the most radical designers in the game including ann demuelemeester, dries van noten and martin margiela)he was encouraged by fellow student raf simons (who later took the jil sander house by storm) to strike out on his own.
what is most intriguing about ackerman's collections are the sharp contrasts between hard, precise lines and heavy, loose draping. it seems to be all at once expressing extreme power and an inviting softness.

rich people are dumb
"a facebook for the social elite"
asmallworld.net was started four years ago as a sleeker alternative to the hype of myspace and facebook. the members of the elite-only site keep it exclusive by only recommending future members who meet the educational, professional and most importantly personal connections criteria. movie mogul harvey weinstein is a professed member and recently bought a stake in the company, making it the only internet based investment for his film empire.
where you and i use myspace to promote a party, or ask for a ride to the airport, the users of asmallworld.net use their networking site for more important things, like selling private islands and finding the best concierge service in ibiza.
there are punishments too. members can be suspended or completely removed if they recommend another member who doesn't comply with the sites rules or for taking advantage of the connections available on the site. you are under no circumstances allowed to message someone who is not in your "circle" of friends and members can be totally banned for posting "inappropriate" bulletins.
a country club for the internet?

brits and pieces
fiamma poltock and katie walsh have stolen my heart. the kingston university graduates have put together one of the most delightfully juxtaposed collection of masculine and feminine pieces for their year old line poltock and walsh. every piece makes me want to hit the dance floor.

fendi and the wall
the great wall of china has seen many things in its 2000 years, but this past friday was a first as fendi creative director karl lagerfeld staged the "first fashion show visible from the moon" when he had models show off the house's spring collection using the wall as the world's longest catwalk. the endeavor cost nearly $10 million to pull off and has had the fashion world buzzing since word hit the streets a few weeks ago. nigo and actress asia argento lent their dj skills for the afterparty at the village at SanLiTun.
fendi currently operates 10 stores in china, with the country ranking third among the asian fendi markets.

i take back any criticism i may have bestowed upon mr lagerfeld.
he is indeed, a rockstar.

this sure isn't your grandma's sweater....
sandra backlund is a swedish designer who graduated from beckman's college in 2004. in her four collections presented since receiving her diploma she has made a name for herself with the trend hunting community by creating intricate, three dimensional collages around the body without the use of any preliminary design or pattern. the results often look like something the heroine of a science fiction film would wear, somewhere between queen amadala from star wars and leeloo from the fifth element.

get you an edumacation
every once in awhile when i get a little frisky i'm going to work to introduce you all to new (and existing) fashion lines/stores/music/movies/books/cultural movements that you should know about.
my first lesson...ACNE.
we've carried ACNE denim at wish and people always ask me "why the hell would you name a clothing line acne?" ACNE actually stands for ambition to create novel expression and the brand itself encompasses much more than fashion. since 1996 the kids involved in ACNE have dipped into everything from clothing to graphic design to TV production. in 1997 one hundred pairs of jeans were produced as a test run and handed out to friends and clients to astounding praise, pushing the collective into the international spotlight.
now the company boasts not only a clothing line but also a film team, a creative marketing team, a digital production company, and a magazine.
their clothing is completely swedish. a little manly, a little oddly proportioned, a little minimalist...completely beautiful...
ACNE

their website has an online shop with a selected inventory of their collection.
peep it all at acnejeans.com

sidetracked
so i had intended on starting coverage of LA fashion week, but after seeing that nicky hilton was the first "designer" to show i decided to focus my attention on the already passed tokyo fashion week. although i will give LA some credit by saying that they are coming up in the fashion world, the overall aesthetic still has a little too much trash around the edges. the whimsical yet structured nature of japanese fashion just suits me better.

i love coming across designers who's aesthetic speaks to me so much that i want their entire collection...
sharon wauchob

***sharon wauchob is an irish designer who graduated from central st martin's in 1993 and has worked under designer koji tatsuno as well as designing textiles for louis vuitton.
another thing i love is finding stores that encompass an entire way of life
someday in melbourne is just that. started by misha and shauna, the brains behind austrailian streetwear line perks and mini (PAM) the store serves as "a gallery to showcase PAM and their friends' works and ideas". stocking only independent brands like bless, married to the mob, undercover by jun takahashi, bernard wilhelm (who recently outfitted bjork and her entire female brass ensemble for her "volta" world tour) supreme, and neighborhood the space serves as a way to spread the words and ideas of artists and designers worldwide.

the perks and mini kids are respected graffiti and graphics artists in their own right and have seamlessly transitioned into making a line of products that are sought out in some of the most discerning boutiques in the world.

ps: shout out to my dude al for vamping up my page!! he's so talented! and you know, the more i think about it the more i'm convinced that al IS the internet...

form and function
somehow architect adam kalkin has turned a standard shipping container into a modern, chic and ultimately portable living space. between november 28th and december 29th kalkin's creations will be put to good use at the time warner center in new york when the italian company illycaffe installs a temporary cafe inside one of the renovated containers. this collaboration was first tested out at the venice biennale where the sleek cafes caused "unprecedented buzz"

love her or hate her you can't deny the fact that chloe sevigny is quite a fashion force to be reckoned with. whether sporting girly designer frocks or androgynous thrift store finds she has pulled together a look that is entirely her own. it seems she's always been involved in the industry, serving as the creative director for friend tara subkoff's imitation of christ line, she plans to launch her own collection for opening ceremony in new york and los angeles. the capsule collection for the forward thinking boutique emulates sevigny's own love affair with edgy pieces made to mix and match.

and as most people who know me in any way know that i love clothing that is multi purpose. hats that can be scarves, skirts that can be dresses and tops that can be worn 3 different ways depending on your mood...

well...
not nearly as exciting as yesterday, but there are a few givenchy pieces i wouldn't mind having in my closet...
givenchy:

requiem:

haider ackerman:

sunday night al and i were having a conversation about whatever the hell happened to lauryn hill, after leaving the fugees to become this amazing solo artist she seemed to just have completely disappeared a few years ago. "the miseducation of lauryn hill" is such an incredible album and if she were to comeback and make something even half as good as that she would completely dominate the female music spectrum.
with an industry full of rhiannas and ciaras and fergies (jesus) we could use a little lauryn hill
